Boys Scouts of America go Racing
Join the Boy Scouts of America as we celebrate 100 years of Scouting adventure and continue our journey into the next century! Celebrating the impact that 100 years of Scouting has had on the lives of millions. For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America's youth.
The Boy Scouts of America is the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. The Scouting organization is composed of 2.7 million youth members between the ages of 7 and 20, 1.1 million volunteers, and nearly 300 local councils throughout the United States and its territories. For more information on the Boy Scouts of America, please visitwww.scouting.org or www.scouting.org/100years
SCTA is honored to Help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the BSA-the nation's largest youth service organization, which now boasts 2.8 million youth members, 1.3 million adult volunteers and 50 million alumni. The BSA and SCTA plan to utilize the high-speed- nature of land speed cars at Bonneville as a platform to promote technology and engineering to those involved in Scouting. The SCTA and the BNI board has granted Free entry to the Boy Scouts and Scout Masters at Speed Week August 14-20, 2010. They will be also issued Pit passes. This will provide a cool way for the scouts to explore the science and engineering of Land Speed racing. www.scta-bni.org

The Great Salt Lake Council Votes for Bonneville Land Speed Race Cars
Boy Scouts search for the fastest patches on the planet!
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Scouting in the United States with many celebrations and events happening. One of those events is the National Jamboree held in Virginia this July. Over 40,000 Scouts and leaders from all over the country will attend. Each Scout Council will send a contingent of Scouts and leaders to participate. The Great Salt Lake Council will send one of the largest contingents in the nation. (645 people consisting of 16 Troops plus 5 staff members)
As part of the planning process, each of the contingents selects a theme, representing something unique to their Council, to feature on their shoulder patches. Patch trading is a huge part of the Jamboree experience for each Scout and the competition to have the most unique set of patches is nothing short of amazing. After many excellent and spirited proposals were made at our Jamboree meetings, the Scouts voted to have Bonneville race cars on their patches to represent our Council.
Off to Speed Week we went with a couple of Scouts in tow. Our goal was to make contact with car owners and ask them how they felt about having their car being represented on one of our patches. Every single person we spoke with, without exception, was gracious and kind to these Scouts and receptive to our request.
Speed Week attendees are the friendliest people on the planet! What we did not anticipate was the amount of time each owner was willing to spend with us to talk about their cars, the condition of the salt, the perfect conditions, the lack of wind, the number of years they had been there chasing the dream and, oh yeah, how Scouting is needed more today than ever before! In fact, we ran out of time before we had enough cars to present to the Scouts for a selection vote. Enter JoAnn Carlson, Media Liaison SCTA/BNI. JoAnn went to work locating owners who were interested in allowing the Boy Scouts to put their cars on a collector patch. We received a wide variety of cars and the selection process went to the Scouts for the final decision. The decision as to which car was selected was strictly in the hands of the Scouts. Most knew nothing of speed records, design, or history of the sport.
