Time change on Reunion

posted Sep 14, 2010 9:18 PM by Web Master

Hi all,

We need to change the time of the Reunion to accommodate a lot of moms who will be attending the General Relief Society meeting at 6:00 on the 25th. Sorry we didn’t pick up on that when we planned that evening.

We are not finding another day to move it to until clear into November. Rather than wait that long, we have decided to move it to earlier in the same day (Sept. 25th). We are proposing to start at 3:00. We know that crowds some game times but hopefully even if you can’t be there right at 3:00 we will see you shortly thereafter. Dinner will be towards the end around 4:00. Hopefully that will wrap things up by 5 so we can get you ladies to Conference on time!!!

Come early if you want to set up your patches to display. We’ll be there at 2:30.

Troop 603 Travel Itinerary

posted Jul 18, 2010 9:54 PM by Web Master

We have edited down the master itinerary that was sent earlier so that it reflects just Troop 603's activities.  There were also some last-minute adjustments to the Friday and Saturday schedules.

The attachment below is in .pdf format which should be easy for all of you to print out so that you can keep up with the troop!

Departure Breakfast

posted Jul 13, 2010 8:50 PM by Web Master

Jamboree Troop 603

We’re excited for Monday.  We know this is an early one but we have a lot to do in 2 hours before we leave. We encourage all parents who can climb out of bed that early in the morning to join your son for a send off breakfast.

The following important information from Scoutmaster Russ:

The schedule for Monday morning is as follows:

5:30 a.m. Meet at Chevez Chapel for travel bag check, tour hat distribution, totem distribution, uniform inspection.

NOTE: At this point it will be too late to “go and get” anything missing or to sew on patches.  Parents please pre-screen the bags to make sure the following items are NOT in the possession of the boy or in his bag.

·         Ballcaps or Hat that are not Official BSA. You will only wear the troops travel Cap on the trip and official BSA caps at the Jamboree

·         T-shirts that are not BSA approved.  Class A Uniforms only on the trip. Could keep a class B for evenings in the hotel room.

·         Basketball shorts or other non BSA attire.  Pajama bottoms could be shorts but you won’t wear them except for bed.

·         Ipods, mp3’s, gameboys, radios, etc.

·         CELL PHONES

DO:

·         Make sure Class A uniforms do have patrol patches (except senior patrol), current rank advancement, Jamboree participant patch, Khaki shoulder loops.

·         Iron on name label is on everything. Where that won’t work use a permanent marker.

6:00 a.m. Breakfast is served.  The food committee will serve a hearty breakfast. Parents can also eat with us.  Many thanks to the food committee for all their great help. The boys will not eat dinner until 6:30 p.m. that night so we’ll provide some snacks to take on the plane.  Airplane snacks just don’t cut it.

6:45 a.m.  Group picture on the lawn.

7:00 a.m. Load vehicles. Our great Committee Chairman Clint Bennion is working on getting a few parents that can help carpool some patrols to the airport. Those that are driving should have their cars lined up on the east side of the east parking lot facing the street so we can get in and go when were done with pictures.

7:15 a.m. Say goodbye to mom and dad. Depart parking lot for the Salt Lake International Airport.

Well have another couple of emails coming out this week and through the weekend with more information including how to follow us pictorially on our trip. Our Troop website will play a big part in that!

See you Monday,

July 8 Troop Meeting Time and Place

I’ve had a few requests to double check the time and place of tonights meeting. 7:00 at the Chavez LDS chapel in South Jordan which is at about 1200 West and 9700 South. It’s just a few blocks north of the Jordan River Temple and visible from 1300 West.

Itinerary and Hydration

posted Jul 8, 2010 9:14 AM by Web Master

Hi Jambo Troop 603!!!

We look forward to seeing most of you tomorrow night as you turn in your bags. It’s hard to believe we are there already!

We have a final Itinerary now, so we thought we would forward a copy of it to you so you can see all the fun we will be having.

If any one has been watching the news lately you may have noticed that the east coast is experiencing a major heat wave right now with record temperatures and high humidity. This is a stark contrast to what we are seeing here at home…. Hopefully this heat will break before we get there but right now it looks like it is here to stay.

In the spirit of “Be Prepared”, a few things your boys should be doing now to prepare for that heat.

·         Back off or even eliminate the Soda Pop, especially caffeinated beverages. These are diuretics and cause the body to loose water, meaning that you have to drink a lot more water to replace it.

·         Start drinking a lot of water NOW! If your body is already dehydrated before we go it will be impossible to catch up in the heat.

·         Have plenty of discussions with your boy on how important it is to drink lots of water on the trip. Dehydration feels different in the humid weather and often they don’t realize they are becoming dehydrated.

·         Buddies need to watch out for their buddy and make sure they are drinking plenty of water.

See you Thursday!

June 17th Troop Meeting

posted Jun 3, 2010 7:01 PM by Web Master

Hi Jamboree Troop 603!

Boy, we’re getting down to the wire real quick! Only 46 days until we soar into the friendly skies, wow!

We have been trying to figure out how to squeeze two meetings into this month. The reason for the two meetings is the long list of stuff we still have to do in the next 46 days. The following is the “to do” list for June:

  • Set up gateway and start designing the embellishments. (Any gateway committee members or those who would like to be on this committee would be helpful to have there that night as well)
  • Make Patrol Flags
  • Work on Patrol Yells
  • Review Bunking Assignments
  • Review ID’s against Travel Manifest
  • Select OA Troop Representative
  • Hand out order forms for OA patches or Pins (Both optional) (Must be a member of the Order of the Arrow to purchase OA patches) (However, my understanding is that one will be included in the complete patch sets that have already been purchased)
  • Hand out additional Jambo participant patches.
  • Hand out Jamboree Shoulder patches (JSP’s)
  • Hand out patrol patches
  • Hand out Hydration/Back Packs
  • Hand out Sleeping Bags
  • Hand out Duffle Bags
  • Hand out Rain Parkas
  • Hand out Travel Hats
  • Distribute Trading Patch Orders
  • Review Patrol Boxes
  • Sign Code of Conduct Forms

What we have decided is that we are going to try to cram all this into the meeting on the 17th of June at the Chavez Chapel in South Jordan. Two things may cause us to have to schedule a follow up meeting. First, it may not be physically possible to do all this in one night. Secondly, there is a chance some of the handout items will not be ready until the following week. If situations force that follow up meeting we will either do it the following Thursday night or the next Saturday. We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

Remember we need to have all gear turned in on July 8th so we can load the semi trucks on the 10th. So hopefully you have already made some progress on the personal equipment list we sent earlier.

Anyone that has received notification from Jamboree medical that there was missing information on their medical forms make sure that is corrected and a copy of it to us ASAP.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the 17th!

FW: Press Release: Boy Scouts of America go Racing

Boys Scouts of America go Racing

Join the Boy Scouts of America as we celebrate 100 years of Scouting adventure and continue our journey into the next century!  Celebrating the impact that 100 years of Scouting has had on the lives of millions.  For 100 years, the Boy Scouts of America has created a strong foundation of leadership, service, and community for millions of America's youth.

The Boy Scouts of America is the nation’s foremost youth program of character development and values-based leadership training. The Scouting organization is composed of 2.7 million youth members between the ages of 7 and 20, 1.1 million volunteers, and nearly 300 local councils throughout the United States and its territories. For more information on the Boy Scouts of America, please visitwww.scouting.org  or www.scouting.org/100years

SCTA is honored to Help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the BSA-the nation's largest youth service organization, which now boasts 2.8 million youth members, 1.3 million adult volunteers and 50 million alumni. The BSA and SCTA plan to utilize the high-speed- nature of land speed cars at Bonneville as a platform to promote technology and engineering to those involved in Scouting.  The SCTA and the BNI board has granted Free entry to the Boy Scouts and Scout Masters at Speed Week August 14-20, 2010. They will be also issued Pit passes. This will provide a cool way for the scouts to explore the science and engineering of Land Speed racing.   www.scta-bni.org

The Great Salt Lake Council Votes for Bonneville Land Speed Race Cars

Boy Scouts search for the fastest patches on the planet!

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Scouting in the United States with many celebrations and events happening. One of those events is the National Jamboree held in Virginia this July. Over 40,000 Scouts and leaders from all over the country will attend.  Each Scout Council will send a contingent of Scouts and leaders to participate. The Great Salt Lake Council will send one of the largest contingents in the nation. (645 people consisting of 16 Troops plus 5 staff members)

As part of the planning process, each of the contingents selects a theme, representing something unique to their Council, to feature on their shoulder patches. Patch trading is a huge part of the Jamboree experience for each Scout and the competition to have the most unique set of patches is nothing short of amazing.  After many excellent and spirited proposals were made at our Jamboree meetings, the Scouts voted to have Bonneville race cars on their patches to represent our Council.

Off to Speed Week we went with a couple of Scouts in tow. Our goal was to make contact with car owners and ask them how they felt about having their car being represented on one of our patches. Every single person we spoke with, without exception, was gracious and kind to these Scouts and receptive to our request.

Speed Week attendees are the friendliest people on the planet! What we did not anticipate was the amount of time each owner was willing to spend with us to talk about their cars, the condition of the salt, the perfect conditions, the lack of wind, the number of years they had been there chasing the dream and, oh yeah, how Scouting is needed more today than ever before! In fact, we ran out of time before we had enough cars to present to the Scouts for a selection vote.  Enter JoAnn Carlson, Media Liaison SCTA/BNI. JoAnn went to work locating owners who were interested in allowing the Boy Scouts to put their cars on a collector patch. We received a wide variety of cars and the selection process went to the Scouts for the final decision. The decision as to which car was selected was strictly in the hands of the Scouts. Most knew nothing of speed records, design, or history of the sport.

No May 23rd Meeting

posted May 22, 2010 3:59 PM by Web Master

Jamboree 603

May 15th Scavenger Hunt

posted May 5, 2010 7:16 AM by Web Master

Hi Jamboree 603!

It was fun to see everyone at Scout-o-Rama. We had a good turnout and patrols got a chance to have some fun together. We appreciate everyone’s diligence especially those patrol leaders that worked hard to plan a great patrol activity.

We are coming up fast on our May 15th Scavenger Hunt day. This is the most exciting pre-Jamboree activity we do as a troop. The boys will have a lot of fun as they learn to work together as a team under the direction of their patrol leader. They will be navigating their way through a Scavenger Hunt using mass transit all over Salt Lake City looking for the next in a series of clues. Throughout this process they will probably learn some things about their home town that they didn’t know and or hadn’t seen before. If they successfully find their way to the end they will be rewarded with Lunch. The clue as to where they will eat will be found somewhere along the way…..

We will all meet at 9:00 at the Sandy Trax station at 10200 South (East of South Town Mall near Jordan High School) We know this seems like backtracking for some of you North of there but we really want they boys to begin this activity together as a patrol. On the way back those of you that would rather pickup your boys at a more convenient Trax stop can arrange that with your patrol leader. We should be coming back down the line around 1:30 to 2:00.

Boys will need to be in Class A uniforms. Since we will be in the public and representing the Jamboree contingent, please have a complete uniform. Everyone should have one by now. So look sharp, be on time and get your thinking caps on…you don’t want to miss that lunch!
